Amtrak was born in 1971, and has now turned 40 in 2011. One of the ways they are celebrating is by painting four units in heritage paint schemes. The first one released is P42 #145 painted in what Amtrak refers to as their “Phase III” heritage paint. On February 11th the 145 led train 21 southbound, and I was able to leave work early and catch it leaving Fort Worth after a helpful call from Steve Grabman. Here is the train approaching the Seminary Drive crossing, and then a second later a close up of the unit itself.
I really wish they would paint everything like this!

Ken, I think you meant 40th Birthday.

Great pictures, Ken, but , you need to check your math, it’s only 40 years for Amtrak. I agree, they should paint all their locomotives in this paint, and the cars to match, too.
Amtrak turns 40 in 2011. This only matters because I don’t want to be any older than I already am!
One of the most beautiful Amtrak units was the so-called “Pepsi-Can” scheme on the P32-8s. Loved those units.
Thanks everyone! Correction made. That is what happens when you write these late at night.
Ken excellent work as always, shame that the unit was involved in a grade crossing accident in San Antonio a few weeks after this was taken. Hopefully it can repaired quickly and put back on the road.
