Overnight in Enid

Late on a chilly night in November of 1982 M-K-T GP7 109 is idling in the engine terminal at Enid, Oklahoma as huge grain elevators are brightly lit in the background.

This ex-Rock Island facility is operated by the Union Pacific today, but back in 1982 the Katy operated the line from Fort Worth, TX to Herrington, KS as the Oklahoma-Kansas-Texas Railroad.

Today’s post-Christmas foray into the slide boxes netted this shot of a Katy coal train back in April of 1987.  Five SD40-2’s are providing the muscle to pull this southbound loaded coal train through the interlocking at Tower 55.

While the controversial interlocking still exists, the Katy is long gone and Tower 55 is buried beneath interstate overpasses.

Sunday evening on the 23rd at the Saginaw, Texas Chamber of Commerce housed in the old SP Kosse depot,  a fir tree decorated by local school children provides Christmas spirit on this relatively warm and snowless day as a BNSF switch job pulls by in the background.

Sunday afternoon after leaving Birds I worked my way north past downtown and on up to Saginaw without finding any rail activities worth photographing as the Christmas slowdown approached.  I was thinking about giving up when the Wichita Falls Sub dispatcher put the BNSF 9363 East into the siding at Avondale and told the crew they might be there for a time.  I headed on up to Avondale and took a still shot of the coal load while the light was still good.
