On Wednesday August 15th Judy, Lukas, Molly and I set out from St. Clairsville for the Amish-rich community around Sugar Creek, Ohio about 70 miles to the northwest. Driving down scenic country roads I stopped for my first picture of the day when we passed over this placid stream.
A few miles further on we saw this ancient barn just off the road.
The further we got away from the Ohio River valley the land began to flatten out to a degree, allowing more vistas and agricultural activities.
On the southern edge of Cadiz, OH we stopped when we saw people filling gallon jugs at this natural spring on the side of the road. One gentleman said he was 65, and he could remember his father bringing him here as a boy for water. We emptied one of our own bottles and sampled the clear, cold and good-tasting liquid for ourselves.
Continuing on our journey we stopped for a bit in Jewett, OH so I could say hello to teenage railfan Nick Parrish with whom I correspond. The W&LE and Ohio Central were quiet and we decided to skip the railroad museum at Dennison, OH. I thought this day might pass without a single railroad picture; but while passing through Dover, OH we came across an ex-CSX line now operated by R. J. Corman as their Cleveland Line according to this building.
The ex-SP 4116, a GP20E, was drilling cars over the crossing into a small yard to the left.
Here is a more head-on shot showing Corman’s distinctive nose art.
Driving on west, a short time later we arrived in Sugarcreek.
