A few more twists and turns in the road brought us into the small community of Armstrong Mills, OH. The view looking north from the grade crossing of a well maintained home, garden and lawn facing the track was too good to pass up, so we settled in and waited for the train to catch up to us once again.
As the Norfolk Southern 3331 passed over the highway I caught a view of the engineer’s side.
After a parade of empty coal hoppers, I shot the fireman’s side of the ex-Conrail Norfolk Southern 3334.
The depth of the valley at this point is made evident by this picture of the rear end about to vanish around a curve to the south.
It was only a few more miles to the loadout at the end of the track, but Judy and Lukas and Molly all voted that it was time to head back to the motel at St. Clairsville and start thinking about dinner. The drive back east to Powhatan Point was uneventful except that I paused for a moment on the north bank of Captina Creek to capture this placid late afternoon view.
The next day our plans would take us to the Amish country around Sugar Creek, OH.
