Good Timing at Davis
Our bus made good time over the Arbuckles, and arrived at the depot museum in Davis shortly after noon on Thursday the 21st. We all got out to photograph and examine the depot and its contents. A few cell phone calls established the fact the other two busses had not left Ardmore yet.
Just south of the depot two ex-BN SD40-2’s and an old Oakway SD60 idled in the house track. This power was tied down waiting for a rock train to finish loading at the facility at the south end of the siding.
With everyone satisfied, we started to load the bus when two new developments changed our minds about leaving just yet. The manager of the Davis Chamber of Commerce across the street from the museum approached me with the news they had prepared fresh cookies and handouts for all of us. At virtually the same moment the radio came alive with word the BNSF 944 North we had seen earlier at Ardmore was coming to Davis to meet a southbound “Z” train. I’m not sure which mattered the most, but the bus quickly emptied again, and we had time to go get our cookies and brochures before the 944 North showed up and took the siding.
Everyone had their cameras ready, and the crew seemed to enjoy the attention.
A few minutes later the BNSF 5051 South came down the main with a “Z” train bound for Alliance Yard.
We had a few members who had crossed to the west side of the tracks, and they returned after the rear ends of both trains passed at the depot.
The excitement was not quite over yet, as a northbound local had flagged into the siding behind the 944 North to also meet the “Z” train. Soon the BNSF 3168, a GP50, pulled up and stopped next to the rock train power which was being fueled from a tanker truck.
That was all for now, so we reboarded the bus and headed for our next stop at the old Dougherty depot that now resides in a new location away from the tracks.
