The Other Lehigh

The Lehigh Valley Railroad that is, stretching from the New York City area through the coal fields of eastern Pennsylvania and on to Buffalo.  First up on a trip to the LV yard at Sayre, PA we see a northbound freigh headed for Buffalo passing near Van Etten, NY on April 30, 1972.  Three ALCO DL-721’s are smoking it up for the camera.

Later we arrived at Sayre, and from the employee foot bridge over the yard we shot this pair of big ALCO Century 628’s as the crew was getting on board.  Nicknamed the “Snowbirds”, their next move was to back onto the train behind them and then head south out of town.

The merger into Conrail was only four years away at this point.
