I barely had my learner’s permit at age 16 to 17 and no car, making longer distance railfan trips difficult. Many times I was lucky enough to escape Wilton, CT and ride along with older and wiser Ed Blackman and Dan Foley. Other passengers my age usually included Hans Kuring and Eric Berger. Eastern New York state was a frequent destination as before the advent of the Penn Central, there were plenty of unique railroads to visit. One of these was the Erie-Lackawanna, and so first up today is an EMD NW-2 resting between switching assignments at the yard in Binghamton, NY.
When we visited Port Jervis, NY the E-8’s used for New York commuter service were always parked at the roundhouse for roster shots. Unfortunately they never ran on the weekends when we were there, so I never got to see them in action.
This final shot for today is not technically perfect as it has some motion blur. This is due to it being too dark a day in February of 1972 for the Kodachrome 64 in my Kodak Rangefinder to allow a viable shutter speed. If only I had my digital camera back then……
The subject matter of Erie-Lackawanna ALCO’s running the last eastbound miles into Port Jervis along the south bank of the Deleware River was too good for me to not include it anyway. Today this line is the single track “Southern Tier” operated by the Norfolk Southern, and sees only moderate traffic on a regular basis.
