Low Sun on July 19th
After work today I had to run a few errands, and on the way home I stopped off at Saginaw to take advantage of the low afternoon light at my back as the BNSF 5401 North approached on the Fort Worth Sub. Another railfan following the train quickly parked and set up for the shot, and after fast introductions I found that I had finally met Mike Bates of aerial shot fame. Additional conversation had to wait for the passing train.
Less than five minutes later an empty coal train was next up as he moved across the diamonds on his way to the connection to the Wichita Falls Sub.
I was hoping for a new unit on the rear, but it was another Grinstien Green MAC pushing today.
Shortly after the rear end passed the north switch of the Transfer Track, a two unit switcher that had been waiting there came out and backed down through the diamonds into Saginaw Yard with GP50 #3167 leading.
The trailing GP38 #2227 was interesting as the cab roof sported a pair of RV air conditioners instead of the older boxy single unit.
Once again only a few minutes passed before the next train, another northbound BNSF out of Saginaw Yard.
An old warrior showed up next as GP7 #1301 and a GP38 came north up the old BN main from North Yard with a single car in tow.
This time the interval between photographs was less than 30 seconds as three GP60’s came down the UP Duncan Sub with a loaded rock train from Chico just as the BNSF units passed out of sight.
Mike and I decided we had done well for less than an hour’s time at this busy spot, so we went our separate ways towards home.
